Before the evening screening of Going Down, join acclaimed music journalist Bernard Zuel and renowned music photographer Stu Spence for a lively exploration of one of the most exciting periods in Australian music history.
From pub rock to post-punk, chart-toppers to cult favourites, the 1980s produced an extraordinary generation of Australian musicians, bands and live music experiences. Drawing on decades of experience documenting the nation's music scene, Bernard will reflect on the artists, venues and cultural shifts that defined the decade, while Stu shares a selection of his striking photographs and the stories behind them.
Together they will revisit the energy of packed pubs, regional tours, iconic performances and the thriving live music culture that connected cities, towns and communities across Australia.
Part visual presentation, part conversation and part oral history, this special event offers a unique opportunity to experience the music, personalities and stories that helped shape a generation.
A must for music lovers, cultural history enthusiasts and anyone who remembers the thrill of live music in Australia's golden age of pub and touring circuits.
Bernard Zuel has been listening to music since the glory days of vinyl and writing about music since the noisy days of typewriters. He wrote for RAM and Rolling Stone, street press and Penrith Press, and worked for the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and smh.com.au for 25 years (and 36 days). A lecturer in journalism at Sydney University, he is a founding judge of the Australian Music Prize, appears on TV and radio in Australia and internationally regularly, and still buys more music than is sensible.
Stu Spence established his career in Sydney during the 1980s and 1990s, as a magazine photographer specialising in celebrity portraiture. Since then, he has also practised fine-art photography, and has works in the National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection. Spence has exhibited several art-photographic series including Salute (1992), Lost In Face (1994), and As Yet Unclear (2007). He has been selected as a finalist for many prominent Australian photography prizes including the Doug Moran Prize (2013), the Head On Prize (2013), the National Photographic Portrait Prize (2014), and the Olive Cotton Award (2015).
