Whistling Kite New Music | Darwin Festival
Join the Northern Territory’s finest musicians for the premiere performances of Whistling Kite New Music.
The musicians of Whistling Kite are distinguished performers, composers, improvisors, conductors and educators in their own right. Together they form the Territory’s newest group dedicated to the performance and creation of contemporary art music.
Experience music from some of most exciting composers working in Australia and around the world in Horizons, a program of music exploring real and imagined horizons. Highlights include Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw’s Punctum, which gazes nostalgically back to the music of the 18th and 19th centuries and reassembles its materials in new forms. In Masakazu Natsuda’s West, Or Evening Song In Autumn, Japanese shakuhachi techniques are applied to the soprano saxophone alongside Japanese percussion to create an immersive, meditative atmosphere. A new work by Artistic Director Nick Yates, inspired by the rhythm of the tides, features the full ensemble coming together for an exquisite world premiere.
