Botanicals - Darwin Festival
Presented by ACCOMPLICE in association with Darwin Festival
Botanicals is a new projection work to be discovered around Darwin over six nights of the Festival.
Carefully choreographed movements map out the porous embodiments of human and more-than-human kind. Head, shoulders, knees, toes, petal, sepal, receptacle, stamen – bodily boundaries, skins and textures are traded, shaped and switched in a curious dance of multi-species exchange from trans-disciplinary artist Matthew van Roden. Curator Britt Guy takes this skin-dance to everyday sites across Darwin in a series of surprising projections where surface, skin, boundary and texture become sites for re-entanglement between the urban and natural world.
Matthew van Roden is an artist of the in-between whose queer creative practice involves interrogating the space between apparent binaries. Material/discursive; inside/outside; male/female; analogue/digital; nature/culture: van Roden explores the gaps and slippages between these seemingly oppositional points.
Britt Guy, through her producing company ACCOMPLICE, curates experimental interdisciplinary work that is distinctive to the Top End drawing on the environment, seasons, peoples and culture that call Larrakia country home.
