Australian National Botanic Gardens presents

Banksia Festival: Weird and Wonderful Banksias

Kids Workshop on Weird and Wonderful Banksias

About this Event

Mums and Dads, whizz your budding botanists (aka ‘kids’) into the weird, wacky world of Banksias. A fun supervised workshop creating characters, planting a Banksia seed and using Banksias in picture-making and painting.

  • Story-telling by the Banksia Man will fascinate and enthral as well as educate.
  • Follow the amazing lifecycle of a Banksia. Extract a seed. Plant a seed. Name it. Take it home. Nurture it. Plant it out. Watch it grow and flower and set seed.
  • Create a Banksia character… eyes, ears, nose, mouth, feet, feathers … just how weird can it be?
  • Take up the challenge of a Banksia Crossword and Banksia questionnaire
  • Listen enthralled to ‘story- time’ by the Banksia Man himself, finding out how Banksias REALLY work. This will be a hands-on sensory time to fly a Banksia Seed, make a Velcro Stick Aeroplane, use a Banksia Brush, calculate a Banksia Compass and really smell the flowers! It will also include information on the uses our aboriginal people made of the Banksias
  • Paint a Possum sitting on a Banksia
  • Make cards and prints, stencils and collages using Banksia Bits and Pieces.

Your children will be encouraged to participate and be creative as they learn, experience and enjoy the activities.

Suitable for children aged 4-12 years. Bookings required.

Kevin Collins has pursued his passion for Banksias for 35 years, developing Banksia Farm, Mount Barker in Western Australia and growing all known species. He now works as a consultant, lectures, and assists Banksia research projects.

Kathy Collins assisted with Banksia Farm, is a keen environmentalist, established a Landcare Group and is a joint fellowship recipient with Kevin, from Land and Water Australia.
